Directions to next destination: Leave Rickmansworth and merge onto M25 via the slip road north signposted Watford M1/A1. Take the A405 exit, 21A, signposted St Albans. At the next roundabout and take 1st exit onto north orbital. Go through the next 2 roundabouts. Take 2nd exit onto A5183. Enter next roundabout and take 1st exit onto Holywell Hill. Turn left onto Sumpteryard.
Visit the magnificent Cathedral & Abbey Church of St Alban, built on the execution site of St Alban, Britain’s first Christian Martyr. Post code AL1 1BY, approx tour time 3 hours. St Albans has great shops and restaurants.
Directions to next destination: At traffic signal turn left signposted London onto A1081. At London colney roundabout take 1st exit onto A414. At roundabout follow A1 (M) signposted the north. Leave A1 (M) at junction 4 onto A414 continue until A119 signposted Hertford.
Hertford has the oldest purpose built Quaker meeting house in the world which was visited by William Penn. Another Hertford man with American connections was the Reverend Samuel Stone, who sailed to America and co-founded Hartford, Connecticut. Approx tour time 30 minutes
